A seismic survey of solar-like oscillators in the colour-magnitude diagram

Abstract:

Our proposal is concerned with verifying the parameters of KIC in order to maximize seismic science returns over the entire mission. We shall to do so by selecting a large number of high cadence (60-sec) survey targets that are expected to show solar-like oscillations. This will allow us to perform an asteroseismic survey of the Sun-like field stars in the Kepler FOV. We propose the selection of at least 1500 targets, with each target being observed for a 30-day (1-month) period during the Survey Phase. By extracting information on the oscillations from the 1-month timeseries: (i) we will be able to infer trends in oscillation properties across the diagram, and thereby make inference on stellar properties; (ii) we will therefore be able to use the inferred stellar properties to verify the KIC; and (iii) this will then provide baseline information against which long-term mission targets can be selected with a high degree of confidence that they will give an excellent scientific return.
